"Galesburg History" -- The War Claims Act of 1948 was enacted by Congress to compensate American prisoners of war who served during World War II. Those receiving compensation, which included civilians internees, were paid from Japanese and German seized assets. Compensation was given at the rate of $1 to $2.50 per-day of confinement in prisoner of war encampments. In 1950 area servicemen from the Galesburg area who were prisoners of war and eligible for compensation included Norman Waller of Monmouth who along with three buddies was captured by Nazi troopers and assigned to a work camp near Essen, Germany. Waller survived on a diet of onion soup which resulted in his weight dropping from 187 to 100 lbs. He was held hostage for more than five months. James Hildebrand of Galesburg and Arthur Mates of East Galesburg were held prisoners for nearly three years after being captured in the peninsula of Bataan in the Philippines. Many Americans, including Dale Timmons of London Mills and William Bainbridge of Victoria were captured on the Belgian-Luxembourg frontier during what was commonly called the Battle of the Bulge. Willis Hodgeman of Galesburg, a nose-gunner on a B-24 bomber, parachuted along the Hungary border line after his plane was struck by enemy fire. He was able to exist by consuming hazelnuts and apples for several weeks while constantly being pursued by the enemy. Hodgeman was reported by the war department as missing in action before eventually working his way back to Allied forces. Air Corps veteran Bernard Pogue of Galesburg was a German prisoner of war for six months in Rumania. Pogue and his bomber crew bailed out of their plane after it was hit by enemy fire. Others included Richard McCullough of Galesburg and Leland Chandler of Cameron who were held captive by the Japanese for a considerable time. Fred Myler and James Snodgrass were prisoners of war of German forces in Europe.
