The pesticide-free strawberry grower
Lochy Porter, 42, launched the pesticide-free brand Good Natured – which sells fruit, including strawberries and raspberries, plus vegetables and herbs – in 2008. The fruit is sold in Britain’s first fully compostable punnets, and all other packaging, if it cannot be composted, is recyclable. Good Natured, which won the fresh produce section of the 2009 Quality Food Awards, is part of Angus Soft Fruits, a family-run business established in 1994. Porter lives in Angus, Scotland, with his wife, Debbie, and their four children ( goodnaturedfruit.co.uk ).
'Good Natured started with strawberries and raspberries before expanding into other products. Now we have 160 acres of fruit production, but I can’t do it all. I’m a strawberry and raspberry man, I don’t know how to grow tomatoes or carrots. But when I explained the idea to our tomato and carrot guys, they got very excited about it.
'I’m in a very specialised area of farming which has involved a lot of trial and error. We have people working for us who spend their lives looking at bugs and monitoring how they interact with our plants. We get friendly bugs sent up in sachets from England – for example, ladybirds to control aphids and a predatory mite called phytoseiulus persimilis to control red spiders.
'When I was a kid the first job of the summer was going out to pick the strawberries on my father’s farm. I usually ended up throwing a few at my brothers, eating a few and finally one or two would find their way into the pallet. When I left school I studied agriculture at college in Edinburgh, went to New Zealand to work on various farms, and then came back and was a tenant on one of my dad’s farms. In 1990 I bought him out and in 1994 my dad and I started Angus Soft Fruits together with my cousin.
'There is so much packaging and waste these days. I remember going to the market when we were young and we’d buy a whole box of apples which we kept out in the cool shed, never in these little plastic bags. It is important to me that Good Natured packaging is compostable or recyclable – even the clear window, which may look like normal oil-based plastic, is actually a bioplastic made from wood pulp.
'I remember sending off my first pallet with about 45 punnets on and being really proud. Now we have lorry-loads leaving every day. Sometimes I stand at the top of the hill and look down on it all and think, 'Goodness me, this has changed a bit.
