In the case of Anne and Manfred Mueckes of Harwood, realizing their dream took eight years from the moment they laid eyes on the property in 2002. It was a rural, overgrown 5.6-acre parcel in south county. Though the main construction was completed late last summer, little chores remain, like designing gardens and additional landscaping.
But, oh! Do they have fantastic dreams.
The Mueckes' home is a soaring testament to their own vision and close collaboration with a group of tradesmen. Several are neighbors, some are longtime friends. Ken Smiley, the architect lives nearby, as does Bruce Bieberich, of Construction Management & Carpentry, and Steve Willsey, from Gene's Plumbing.
Manfred was born in Berlin during World War II. His family emigrated after the war. Anne and Manfred headed east to Loudoun County from California in 1990. Parents of four grown sons, the Mueckes resided in Virginia until they moved to Maryland in September 2008 to supervise the construction of their new home.
Their 20-year-old business moved with them. Horticopia Inc. ( www.horticopia.com ) is a software program the Mueckes developed for the professional green industry - garden centers, landscape design firms and small nursery growers. The program searches, views and prints photos and information about plants. The couple wanted a place where they could conduct business while surrounding themselves with their own verdant dreamscape.
"We were here every day during the construction process," said Anne. "We wanted lots of windows. In Loudoun, we had a colonial-style house with smallish windows."
Manfred was delighted to find a rural setting "this close to Washington and Annapolis. It's 20 minutes from Annapolis, 35 minutes from BWI and 5 minutes from the water in Galesville.
"We wanted to fit in with the neighborhood," commented Anne. "We didn't want a big mansion. And, in every room, I wanted to look out and see a nice view. Every room but one has indirect sunlight." The one hallway without sunlight has a solar light tube that brings sunlight into the room through a tube in the ceiling. A powder room near the front door had no access to sunlight - so a skylight was inserted into the ceiling of the cube-like room that rests beneath the eave of the larger living room.
