Contest: My Pet is Sooo Hot That.... (Entry 35)
This must be like the dog equivalent of going to the swim club. Sasha, here, is having a dip at the Harford County Humane Society dog park.
Jason said he was at an event at the Falston shelter when Sasha, who's a German Short Haired Pointer decided to take advantage of one of the pools in a shaded area. "It was hot so she walked in and rolled around in the water," he said.

Fallston, MD (August 4, 2011) – Saturday, August 20, 2011 is International Homeless Animals’ Day, and the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) will celebrate the day by offering 50% off all pet adoptions for customers who bring a bag of unopened pet food from 10am – 5pm. All donations of pet food will help to stock HSHC’s food pantry to help families that are suffering economically and are having difficulty feeding a beloved pet. Oftentimes the food pantry means the difference between families keeping their pet and needing to surrender it to the shelter. The shelter will also raffle a number of pet-themed gift baskets with all proceeds benefitting the homeless and neglected animals that are waiting for loving homes.
International Homeless Animals’ Day was started in 1992 as an innovative educational vehicle to raise awareness of the pet overpopulation epidemic that overwhelms animal shelters each year. Organizations from around the world come together on the third Saturday in August to promote new campaigns, programs and ideas on the solution to the pet overpopulation crisis: spay and neuter.
The Humane Society of Harford County strongly advocates the sterilization of companion animals. Should you have an unsterilized pet, HSHC has many resources to help you get the procedure done. Millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized annually in shelters nationwide or suffer as strays. Many of these are the result of unwanted, unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.
But the benefits of spay and neuter go beyond controlling the animal population. Both neutered male canines and felines tend to stop roaming and fighting, and they also lose the desire to mark their territory with urine. The sooner you spay your female, the better her health will be in the future. The longer a female goes unspayed, the greater the likelihood of developing mammary tumors or uterine infections. If you have a new puppy or kitten, talk with your veterinarian about when they recommend the surgery.
The animal shelter is located at 2208 Connolly Road in Fallston, MD. Directions as well as a listing of adoptable animals can be found by visiting our website at www.harfordshelter.org .
