BMW's smallest is bigger and better
BMW has thrown a few distractions into the mix with the second-generation version of its new 1-series.
As well as growing in terms of its length (by 85mm), wheelbase (30mm) and width (17mm) - all in the name of much needed extra cabin room - the truncated premium hatch is introducing new trim packages, some of which will polarise as much as the car's stubby rear styling did when it was first launched in 2004.
You'll be able to opt for your 1-series in Sport or Urban trim, with such items in the latter car as white wheels available, along with matching wing mirrors, a pale slash across the car's lower rump and shiny white acrylic cabin decorations for the dash, door panels, vent surrounds and centre console if you wish.
This car has grown up not only dimensionally, but also in the way it drives and feels. And this was a relief, because an initial British magazine report I'd read about the car said that it was "dull".
Given a test track on which to exercise the car after more than 400km on the public roads and autobahns around Berlin, I began to wonder if the writer of the above opinion had driven the same car that I did.
No chance. There's nothing to beat a rear-driven car for basic feel and cornering deportment.
I was able to pitch the new 1-series into corners and hose- soaked turn-in points with more than socially acceptable gusto, just to see what the British weekly I'd read was going on about.
The car still has that nicely resistant, well-weighted and incisive steering as before, and if anything it's even more communicative and hard-wired tightly to what is a brilliantly well- sorted and pleasantly balanced set of underpinnings. You can feel the tail flowing round behind you, and only on slick wet asphalt did I feel the Sport-plus setting on the test car having to intrude gently on the 1-series' progress.
Those settings can be personally set by way of the "Driver Experience Control" rocker switch, which brings up Sport, Sport-Plus, Comfort and even Eco pro settings that also contrive gearbox shift points, throttle responsiveness and even ways to maximise fuel economy.
The chassis isn't perfect. On the 17-inch optional wheels and tyres, things were a little busy on autobahn expansion gaps and it did get a tad jittery on broken surfaces. It's better in 16-inch rims, with more air and rubber between it and the road, and with the optional chassis adjustment set on comfort, is quieter and smoother, without compromising handling talent much at all.
