Silver Creek showcases student art
SILVER CREEK - Students recently showcased their creative art work at the annual schoolwide art show.
The annual art show has been showcasing students' achievements in art for 22 years.
In the elementary school, art teacher Denise Williams arranged the students' art in the lobby. Students displayed art of all mediums, including sculpture, pottery, drawing, painting, photography and several others.
Some projects were self-portraits or interpretations of plants or animals, but all were an expression of the student.
"Art is essential to learning. The goal in education is to help students reach greater heights. However a student's achievement isn't always best measured through a test score ... The personal discipline that it takes to complete a task starts at a young age," Williams said.
Second-graders used pastels to do self-portraits and the backgrounds were filled in in their favorite colors. Second-graders Hunter Prinzback, Amanda Roth and Sierra Jordan said they love art class.
Hunter, 7, said that his favorite thing about art class is the art show.
Amanda, also 7, said she likes to draw.
Fifth-graders completed a variety of projects on display at the art show.
James Fazzolari sculpted a clay pot and painted it with many different colors and did a 3-D drawing.
Piper Brunn also did several projects including a contour line drawing of a flower (her favorite project) and a scratch board picture of a fox.
James said he likes art class because he is able to express his emotions and creativity. He said that he also likes that he has a choice of what to do, unlike in other classes.
"Through their art projects children develop imagination, creativity, self expression and communication. They also develop critical thinking and problem solving skills and they understand first hand what it means to carry out a significant task in which they become their own motivator. These are all skills considered vital to a child's development and our country's progress," Williams explained.
She also encouraged parents to ensure that art has an important place in their children's education from Pre-K through grade 12.
"(The art show) is a joy to watch, it's phenomenal experience for our students. They all feel like Picasso," Elementary School Principal Lynn Gowan said.
Both James and Piper also participated in an afterschool program called the Chair Project. Williams said that the project starts with an idea the students submit ahead of time, so that they are "ready to work when they come in.

Art for Small Hands: Drawing - Inside a Dwelling
Explain to the children that they will be drawing the interiors, or inside views, of dwellings. Show the children the cut-away side of a dollhouse. Point out that the only visible part of the outside of the house is the line around its edges, called the contour line, and that the interior of the house is divided into floors and sections. Tell the children that the contour lines of their dwellings should be drawn large enough to fill the paper and that the interiors can be divided into as many sections as they like, as long as each section is large enough to include details. (Using rulers will result in more clearly defined areas.) Discuss ways the children might fill the sections of their dwellings with items such as furniture, rugs on the floors, and pictures on the walls. Encourage the children to include patterns , or decorative designs, wherever possible. Have the children draw their dwellings and then use their imaginations to fill the interiors. Although the drawings shown here are of houses, this project might include any type of dwelling that the children can fill with their imaginations. The joy of this project is in the details such as the bowl of "cupons" (coupons) and art work on the refrigerator in the first drawing; the nest of just-hatched baby birds in the picture above the couch in the second drawing; or the enthusiastic rendering of wallpaper in the third drawing. LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR WORK You can decide the number of floors you would like to include in your house. Just be sure that all of the sections are large enough to include lots of details. If you have time, you can add some details to the outside, but remember that the most important part of this lesson is the inside of the dwelling. Remember to draw a cut-away view of the igloo and then what you might find inside of it. Its fun to look at the drawings and discover such wonderful details as a picture of you and your mother.
