Linda Winter put a lot of time and thought into decorating her apartment. Here are her tips:

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful décor. Be creative, and always be on the lookout for furniture and decorative items you can get at a bargain price.

You do need a vision, a strong idea of what you would like the space to look like. Stay true to that vision. Even if you find something that appeals to you, if it doesn’t work with the rest of the décor, don’t buy it.

Be patient. It takes time to find just the right items, especially if you are buying second-hand or looking for bargains. “It took me several years to accumulate everything for this apartment,” Winter says.

Find a good source for the kind of items you want. In Winter’s case, that was her friend Jo Lynn Swint’s furniture consignment store, Off My Rocker, just a few blocks from the apartment. “Ninety percent of what’s in this apartment came from her store,” Winter said.

Linda Winter felt immediately drawn to her compact apartment in the Monte Vista area when she saw it almost four years ago. And it's hardly surprising — she lived in the very same apartment 41 years ago, when she was just starting out in San Antonio.

“I was working downtown, and this was a good location,” she says. “The carpet was awful and I had almost no furniture, but when you're young, those things don't matter.”

Four decades later, Winter's apartment is a far cry from the way it looked in 1970. The décor is classic, a symphony in blue and white with every item placed to please the eye. “This is my canvas,” Winter says.

She downsized from a larger home when she moved to the apartment in the fall of 2007.

“I kept almost nothing from my previous life, except things my children had given me,” she says. “I went to an estate sale right before I moved here and saw a white upholstered chair. I bought it, and that began my odyssey of white.”

She soon added blue to the color palette in the form of classic print fabric on an antique chair and an ottoman. Blue-and-white Asian-style pottery lamps and vases are featured throughout the apartment, which is a large rectangle with the kitchen and bathroom at the front, living area in the center and sleeping area at the back. Sliding glass doors to a small fenced patio bring light to the interior.
