FAA Impasse Should Result in Reform

Leave the FAA to continue ... and I can not help but get fired by the essential air service (EAS) into the equation. Again, we are talking about a program for 2300 places 4000 as a major reason federal employees are currently missing paychecks.

If we're going to spend tax money to provide a fair air service, Crescent City is the kind of place we should have in mind.

On the other hand, take Athens, GA. Made famous by REM. University of Georgia and the notorious (Gator Bait!), Athens is a mere 77 miles from Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport.That's right - you and me and all our friends offer a subsidy rate of more than $ 1 million so that travelers can avoid Athens and a half hour drive. To make matters worse, the 2009 ACS confirms that over 93 percent of households in Athens have access to a personal vehicle - so most people could make the trip.

And Athens is just one example. Hot Springs (53 miles to Little Rock), Visalia (44 miles to Fresno) and Pueblo (43 miles to Colorado Springs) are all within driving distance of an airport with domestic flights.Of course, ignores the three EAS airports because the FAA defines "medium or large hub" airports considered EAS service.

The reality is that this program must be reformed. And while I am fully aware of nuanced arguments surrounding the union of the debate reauthorization of the FAA, there is no reason for the policy number to get in the way of sensible economics. Reform program, save money. Is it really so difficult?

Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill by Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro Friday, D-Arcata, allowing the Smith River Rancheria to join the side borders of the Regional Airport Authority and other local joint powers agreements involving sewer water and transport management.

"Del Norte County depends on the entire community gathering to make progress toward economic prosperity, and tribal governments are an essential part of this team," said Chesbro in a press release. "Elk Valley Rancheria has been a valuable member of the airport authority for joint authority since its inception in 2007.Smith River Rancheria was an invitation of membership to join the PPA, and right now state will allow this to happen. "

Assembly Bill 798 amends Section 6529 of the Code of government in California to designate the Smith River Rancheria Tribal Council a "public body" in order to enter the Authority boundaries Coast Regional Airport and other joint powers agreements (JPA) with Crescent City and Del Norte County as "assist, facilitate, develop or improve sewage, stormwater, drinking water or transportation services."

The new appointment takes effect from 1 January 2012.

Members of the Border Coast Regional Airport Authority of APP, which manages the airport's commercial Crescent City, Jack McNamara Field, are Crescent City, Del Norte County, Elk Valley Rancheria, Brookings, Oregon, and Curry County Oregon.
