Laughter is the best cure for cultural misconception, or at least that was the idea behind Egyptian-American comedian Ahmed Ahmed’s film “Just Like Us,” which was released this month. Simultaneously breaking down common misconceptions about Arabs and poking fun at those stereotypes, the movie follows Ahmed and his band of comedian friends on a tour of the Middle East that included stops in Dubai, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. There, they were met by sold-out crowds in a part of the world where perpetual conflict and strict religous codes too often leave little room for public expressions of humor. In an interview following a screening of the movie at the Harmony Gold Theater, Ahmed touched on his inspiration for the film and how the Internet age has helped introduce the Arab world to comedy.
Well, it’s coming together through the Internet really. Comics in America are exposed in the Middle East strictly through YouTube. I was shocked when I went over to the Middle East and Arabs would come up to me and ask, “Do you know Jeff Dunham? You know, the puppet guy.” I would say, “Yes.” They were like, “We love that joke he does about Achmed the Dead Terrorist.” He has like 40 million hits on YouTube. I said, “You guys aren’t offended by it?” And they said “No, man — it’s … hilarious.” So, the Internet has really tied everything together. Facebook and YouTube has connected everybody, and I think it’s only going to continue to grow. ... Comedy is bridging the world.Share some of your experiences in Saudi Arabia, a country that is closed off in so many ways. How were you and the other comics received? The shows in Saudi were the only shows not sanctioned by the government. They almost promote them like raves. What they do is create a Facebook events page, one for the guys and one for the girls, then you get a call the day of the show from a random person saying, “Go down the dirt road, make a left at the bush, you will see a monkey.” You drive down this dirt road and you see this American compound with like 2,000 Saudi kids. The interesting thing about that, is that the Saudi kids go to these events because they want to socialize. They are not allowed to socialize publicly — it’s illegal.
What was the atmosphere like in the four countries you visited? You may have heard in the news about a Saudi woman who got arrested for nine days because she got caught driving. Now, Saudi women are going to protest on the 17th. They are going to try to overthrow that law. Things are changing, and I think it’s awesome. Even with all the revolutionary stuff that’s been going on in Egypt and Tunisia, it’s having a domino effect. They are saying, “You know what, we have a voice. We want to be Western, too. We don’t hate Americans. We don’t hate American culture, we just don’t agree with the foreign policies.” It’s all changing. I think the Internet, Facebook, Twitter and Blackberry messenger is connecting the world. … They laugh as equally loud and hard in every country. There wasn’t one country that was better or worse. They laughed at everything, although I would have to say Lebanon was probably one of my more favorite places to be, because you don’t have to censor yourself.
