Bangor John Glenn baseball team aims for first regional title

BANGOR TWP. — Before the start of the season, the Bangor John Glenn baseball team created a list of goals to accomplish in 2011. 

On Saturday, the Bobcats have an opportunity to cross one of those goals off their list. 

No. 5-ranked John Glenn (29-5) is looking to win the first regional championship in program history when it takes the field at the Division 2 regional at Midland Bullock Creek. 

“One of our goals at the first practice was to win regionals, because we’ve never done that before,” senior Jarrett Page said. “(During) practice this week, I could tell our team was focused.”

Standing in the Bobcats’ way in the 12:30 p.m. semifinal is Lapeer East (26-3), which belted its way past Imlay City and Yale for a district crown. The winner takes on either No. 3 Mount Pleasant (21-7-1) or Goodrich (24-4) in the regional final at 3 p.m.

“All four teams over there have had very good seasons,” John Glenn coach Jeff Hartt said. “The team that wins that could go a long way. I’m looking forward to some good baseball.”

To earn Glenn’s first regional title, Hartt is relying on the leadership of his two seniors, Page and Travis Bryant.

“They’ve been team leaders ever since they started playing for us,” Hartt said. “Travis and Jarrett are pretty quiet, so when they say something, people listen because they know it means something.”

Bryant said he and Page lead by example, something they learned as ninth graders on varsity. 

“As freshmen, we couldn’t be vocal leaders, so we did our part on the field,” Bryant said.

As first-year players on the 2008 team, Page and Bryant were part of the squad that broke through with a district final win over No. 2 Bullock Creek. It was Glenn’s first district title since 2003 and second overall. 

That started the Bobcats on their way to four straight district titles, including a 5-4 win over Bay County rival Essexville Garber in the district finals last weekend. 

But despite the district success, the Bobcats have yet to capture a regional crown, something Page said would “mean the world” to him.

“I would be very disappointed if we didn’t win,” Page said. “I want to leave that little legacy to give future John Glenn (teams) something to build off of.
