Summer on Main provides fun for many
This was the biggest Summer on Main Street yet. Combined with the Generations Reunion at Handley High School and the Soul Tymes Nine concert in the gym, many former and current residents made a point to be in Roanoke Saturday.
The newly added quilt show and hat show in the McDonald Family Life Center were winners. Gorgeous new and heirloom quilts were displayed, and ladies wearing finery pleased the audience in the air-conditioned atmosphere where refreshments were served.
Local historian Rhonda Bailey Baldwin gave an entertaining lecture on rules related to wearing of hats in the past.
Joy Harris displayed heritage quilts on both sides of her family. One is 136 years old and was quilted by her great-grandmother, Sarah Adieline Cobb Green, when she was 17 years old in 1875.
The quilts eligible for prizes were in the following categories: hand stitched, machine stitched and baby quilts.
Lynn Newsome stitched away among her quilts as events went on. "I just love quilting. I like to talk to quilters and I'm here to meet other quilters," she said as she worked on a beautiful top to a quilt and answered questions from those interested in quilting.

Cindy Norred said she did not make the quilt that won first place in the Baby Quilt division but it is very special to her. Rusty Sheppard quilted all the staff members at the Randolph County Learning Center a quilt last year and planned to surprise them at Christmas with the present. He died in August. His mother honored his wishes and "gave us the quilts for Christmas. I entered mine on Saturday in the baby quilt division and it won first place. It was a Dresden Plate."
Rusty had attended the Learning Center until his death in August, 2010, she said.
Velma Nolan, who has seven children, 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, has given all of them a quilt, usually when they marry, she said.
