The first permanent settlement

Saturday, June 18, 2011, will be the 250th anniversary of the settlement of Bennington. On that date in 1761, the first permanent, sizable, English-speaking group of settlers arrived in our area.

Since "our area," includes Pownal and Shaftsbury, we should note that a group of Dutch-descended people from the Manor of Rensselaerwyck near Albany were settled continuously along the Hoosick River in Pownal about 30 years prior to the settlement of Bennington. Those people were originally part of New Amsterdam, a colony owned by Holland, but after England seized the Dutch colony in 1664, the Van Rensselaer colonists became part of the colony of New York.

This article is designed to let local readers enjoy what is known about the first settlement, and also to correct some mistakes that have crept into our history.

In the first seven months after the first settlers arrived in 1761, there were no recorded meetings of the Bennington settlers, neither political meetings nor religious meetings. None of the English colonies nearby -- New York to the west, Massachusetts to the south, and New Hampshire to the east -- immediately claimed control of the settlement at Bennington when it was founded.

The settlers of Bennington were religious people from Massachusetts and Connecticut who wanted to reject their established Congregational churches because they had become evangelists (also called "born again Christians") who sought to settle in the Wilderness to found a new religious community where non-evangelicals would be excluded. They wanted to bring a minister with them, but had failed in their attempts to recruit one. It was three years before the Rev. Jedediah Dewey arrived. By that time, it seems, the attempt to exclude non-evangelicals from living in Bennington had been found impractical and was abandoned.

It took almost 100 years (until 1869) before Bennington had its own history, and that book was primarily a history of the Old First Church rather than the town, produced by the minister Isaac Jennings. We now know more about our first days than Rev. Jennings told us in his book, and some of our past misunderstandings of our own history come from his well-intentioned effort.
