Carnival to cruise year-round from New York
Carnival Cruise Lines will be cruising from the Big Apple on a year-round basis beginning in April 2012, a first for the line.
The 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle will be homeported in New York doing eight-day cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas, officials said.
From April to October, 2012, the Spirit-class ship will cruise from New York to San Juan, St. Thomas and Grand Turk; alternating with a Bahamas itinerary that calls at the private Bahamas island of Half Moon Cay (operated by sister line Holland America), Grand Turk and Nassau.
From November to April, the Carnival Miracle will cruise to the Bahamas and Florida with calls at Port Canaveral (giving passengers access to Orlando attractions), Nassau and Freeport, Bahamas.
Carnival began cruising from New York more than a decade ago, including summertime sailings to New England/Canada. The line first launched Caribbean cruises from the Big Apple on the Carnival Miracle in 2004, with the ship recently spending half the year in the market.
In announcing the year-round positioning, Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO, said New York is already "one of the highest-rated homeports" for the cruise line, and that the new cruises should be particularly attractive to the Northeast drive market.
New York officials naturally praised the economic boon the year-round positioning will bring. New York City Economic Development Corporation President Seth W. Pinsky said the Carnival Miracle will attract an estimated 52,000 passengers and generate nearly $13 million in direct spending.
Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Gem also cruises year-round from New York, while Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas cruises year-round from nearby Bayonne, New Jersey. Neither cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas year-round, however (the ships also do Bermuda and New England/Canada itineraries).
The Carnival Miracle is currently cruising from New York on an eight-day Caribbean program through October. The ship will then reposition to Fort Lauderdale before heading back to New York in April 2012.

The problem is most cruises are booked way in advance for the Christmas holidays. On top of that, cruise lines know they will get a full ship and therefor charge more for holiday cruises then any other time. Go ahead and try vacations to go and look at the 90 day ticker. They have some of the best prices anywhere and are very reliable. My last cruise was booked through them and I got a real good price for it.
