Sears will carry Consumer Cellular's no-contract phones

Consumer Cellular has finalized a deal to put its no-contract phones in 800 Sears department stores across the country, giving the Tigard company a large brick-and-mortar network as it seeks continued growth.

Consumer Cellular is a rapidly expanding wireless reseller , operating on AT&T's network. It targets seniors, primarily, with low-cost phones and no-contract plans. A partnership with AARP helped Consumer Cellular grow to $136 million in revenue last year , up from $100 million in 2009.

Until now, customers have generally had to order Consumer Cellular service online or over the phone. But the company has fervently sought a retail partner for customers who want to see a phone before they buy it, or for customers who need a phone immediately.

"We feel it's a natural transition for us," said CEO John Marick.

Consumer Cellular has held retail trials before, including one with Sears last year. Marick said the company learned the importance of vibrant displays, and of creating incentives for clerks on the sales floor to familiarize themselves with his company's products and plans.

"Just putting the phones in the stores wasn't going to cut it," he said.

Consumer Cellular offers three phones through Sears, ranging in price from $35 to $80. Monthly plans start at $10 for people who rarely use their phones, and run as high as $60 for 2,400 minutes .

The company has 600,000 customers nationwide, and its work force has doubled in the past year to 400. Employees are split evenly between Oregon and a call center in Phoenix.

Last summer our Sears was rude and acted dumb too.. I wont use them again for a big purchase.. Got what I needed in Killeen by phone and they were very VERY helpful. Stuck a hold on the product with my name on it till I got there. Wouldn't even take payment over the phone.. Old Skool.. I like it.

Read the installation manual online before purchasing to make sure all hoses etc would be included with the dishwasher. Arranged to have plumber at the house at 7:00AM the day after the dishwasher was delivered. Plumber got 2/3 through and discovered a part was missing. Looked through the installation instructions that came with the manual. A separate piece of paper stuck inside said we'd need X part for installation and that part was not included. The last time I dealt with Sears was about 20 years ago. My in-laws' dryer quit working and I had a question about a particular part. A simple yes/no question. I called an 800 number Sears used for technical questions and they said I'd need to give them a credit card number to pay the fee for their help. We went back and forth on that for about a half hour before my f-i-l said he'd pay it. So he did, and I got my answer. I bought a new refrigerator where I work, this last Saturday, and I got screwed too. I know every one who works there and it still was a pain in the TUSCH. SO I go in expecting very little from any store and when I do get great service I am very pleased. This way I am not disappointed with the lousy service I receive most of the time. Sad situation, Sad commentary on today's work ethic.
