Cumberland Victorian has elegance, character in a rural setting

CUMBERLAND –– Though it was built in 1993, the Canning house in Jasons Grant, a subdivision built on a hill in the rural northern section of town, still looks brand new.

The yellow-painted shingles on the exterior of this Victorian-style house are still bright, and inside, every room appears fresh and stylishly decorated.

This is due to the decorating skills of Mary Canning, who also made all the elegant window treatments throughout her home.

The house is on a .92-acre lot in a serene spot near the top of Jasons Grant Drive, a cul-de-sac near Diamond Hill State Park and the Diamond Hill and Arnold Mills reservoirs.

Pat Canning said their house was the first one built in the Jasons Grant subdivision. He said he and his wife, who have always liked shingle-style Victorian houses, found house plans in that style, and they worked with the developer to customize those plans.

In 2001, the Cannings added the billiard room at the back of the house, along with a deck and gazebo.

The house has 3,897 square feet of living space, including four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and two half bathrooms. There is also plenty of storage, including multiple closets and other storage nooks hidden under window seats and built into walls.

The hallway between the living room and family room has a built-in, granite-topped desk on one side, and built in storage on the other.

The living room has a beautiful cherry built-in bookcase with a sliding ladder to access the higher shelves.

The eat-in kitchen is open to the family room with a gas fireplace, and there is also a formal dining room.

The sunny kitchen has light green walls, white cabinets and appliances, and granite countertops.

There is a deep double sink in one counter, and a small circular sink with a gooseneck faucet in the built-in center island.

A small room off the kitchen, which could be used as a home office, has a treadmill and freestanding wire shelving, filled with cookbooks.

The entertainment room at the rear of the house has a large-screen built-in TV and a bar area with granite countertops, sinks and a small refrigerator. The room has also multiple windows and a coffered ceiling.

Above the three-car garage, a large sewing room was custom designed for Mrs. Canning. It has raspberry-colored walls above white-painted beadboard paneling, two long built-in counters/desks, two large storage closets, and access to a private deck.
