The tragic tsunami in Japan, which resulted in shortages of Japanese imports, has no doubt helped American car makers. Wells alumna Kitty Van Bortel ’76 earned this year’s Athena Award from the Rochester Business Alliance’s Greater Rochester Women’s Council. Kitty earned this recognition as the president of Van Bortel Subaru and Van Bortel Ford, a pair of successful, continually-growing dealerships in Victor, NY. The award, according to the Women’s Council website, “recognizes women who demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in their business or profession, provide valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community, and actively assist women in realizing their full leadership potential.” The Athena Award was given in a special ceremony on January 21.
Kitty founded her first dealership in 1985 and opened Van Bortel Subaru in 1991. The business quickly grew, and within a year, Kitty was selected for the Subaru Chairman’s Roundtable. Van Bortel Subaru is currently one of the largest, top selling Subaru dealerships in the United States. In 2001, Kitty opened Van Bortel Ford, which has proven to be an equally successful venture with a pair of Ford’s Top 20 Sales Achievement Awards.
During her time as one of Rochester’s most effective business owners, she has also earned four listings in Working Woman magazine’s Top 500 Woman-Owned Businesses, was one of one of Automotive News’ “100 Leading Women in the North American Auto Industry,” and was named “One of Rochester’s Most Influential Women” by the Rochester Business Journal. She has received “Woman Business Owner of the Year” from the Victor Local Development Corporation, the Herbert W. Vanden Brul Entrepreneurial Award from RIT’s Business School, and was named to the Commission on Independent Colleges and University’s Alumni Hall of Distinction.
This year marks the 25th Athena Award given by the Women’s Council. Kitty was selected from among 18 finalists.
