Protesters rally to save Greyhounds

Animal Rights Foundation of Florida organized a demonstration at Orlando Sanford Kennel Club in Longwood, difficult and owners of greyhounds bettors to reassess the controversial sport of dog racing.

About 20 protesters stood outside filtered racegoers in the stands of the Hippodrome on June 25, brandishing signs with slogans such as "dog racing kills thousands" and distributing information leaflets that reflects badly on the racing industry.

"Death" made an appearance at the event, donning a dark suit-mower in an attempt to make a statement about the high number of casualties caused by greyhound racing.

"This is how we can demonstrate the truth," said Carla Wilson, ARFF Coordinator. "Death visits Sanford Orlando Kennel Club and each track through the United States."

According to Vic Harrison, general manager of Sanford Orlando Kennel Club, AFF has organized annual events on the grounds of race for years.

"I totally respect their right to meet in public and their views as they do not disrupt our business, they do not. The signs were noted more to the greyhound industry of our site in particular, "said Harrison.

Wilson said she first became involved in activism when she and her husband, Bryan, has adopted a greyhound race old in 1996. The dog was first left at a "vet to kill" after he could no longer running.

The condition of their young dog but physically drained motivated them to volunteer for the rescue of greyhounds, and they dealt with the Sanford Orlando Kennel Club on a regular basis.

"We would pick up the dog kennel. We have seen first hand what was happening," says Wilson. "They smell bad. Many of them were infested with fleas, ticks, internal parasites. Their teeth were rotted of their mouths. All these things were very common when we got the dogs. "

According to Carey Theil, executive director of Grey2KUSA, a national nonprofit organization for the protection of greyhounds, racing dogs tend to live in cramped quarters.

"The dogs are kept indoors with no windows in the warehouse-style wooden or metal kennels, and there are two superimposed rows on each side," said Theil."Every building has at least 100 greyhounds, and the compound over a 500 to 1,000 greyhounds."

Bryan Wilson, who is also a coordinator ARRF, said the greyhound in the kennel bedding includes pieces of newspaper or carpet remnants.
