Talk of the County
Crony capitalism
Socialism is sharing, and crony capitalism like we have it’s every man for himself. In a game like that, the rich man always wins.
Jail junk food
The people talking about the kind of food that’s served in the jail are missing the point. We as taxpayers have a contractor through the County Board who provides the food to the jail. We pay good tax money for good food and they are getting junk. I’m not too worried about the prisoners in the jail because they made their bed and they have to sleep in it. What I’m worried about is whether the same thing happens at Winchester House.
Nodding off
I attended the Lake County Board meeting and heard all the arguments on why Winchester House should be privatized. I was sitting in the audience and the board members were nodding and going to sleep during an open forum when people were talking. That is not right. We voted you into office and you get a salary so stay awake for your salary. At least look attentive.
Payroll tax
The Republicans object to taking $500 billion from Medicare for Obamacare, but they think it’s all right to reduce the employees’ payroll tax on Social Security by 2 percent in 2011 and maybe extend it for another year and also reduce the employees’ share by 2 percent. My question is where will the money come from to pay the current Social Security recipients? Are they going to say we must raise the debt ceiling so we can pay for Social Security by borrowing the money since the trust fund is empty?
Star power
It has been said that the Republican presidential field lacks star power. The Democrats’ star won in the 2008 election. How’s that been working out for you?
Pro fetus
The Republican Party is not the Pro-Life Party it is the Pro-Fetus Party and the moment those fetuses are born they are on their own.
Winchester House
It is a horrible thing what the County Board members did to Winchester House. They do not value a skilled work force or care about the residents that live there. Hope the taxpayers remember this when they are up for re-election.
Drive less
This is about the guy that thinks he’s getting ripped off in Lake County and wants to go to Wisconsin for $3.77 a gallon gas. All we have to do is stick together as Americans and drive as less as we have to and then that gas will keep going down in every state.

College of Lake County biology professor Robert Remedi (Gurnee) has received the Illinois Community College Trustees’ Association’s 2011 Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member Award. The prestigious award has been presented annually since 1985 to honor an outstanding community college instructor in Illinois. This is the first time a CLC instructor has received the award.
Remedi accepted the award at a ceremony held in Normal, Ill., on June 3. He was selected from among 37 faculty nominees from throughout Illinois. In April, he was selected for a similar CLC award.
“I can’t imagine doing anything else in life but teach,” Remedi said in written statement submitted by CLC in support of his nomination for the state honor. “I see teaching as an opportunity to share my talents and experiences in a way that will stimulate interest in the topic and encourage students to want to discover more.”
The Trustees’ Association award is a very high honor, according to CLC President Dr. Jerry Weber. “We are very proud that a CLC faculty member has received the state award,” Weber said. “At community colleges, we focus on teaching and believe the quality of our faculty sets us apart. With this distinction, Bob Remedi has been recognized as one of the best of the best.”
Remedi himself is modest about his achievement. “I’m very happy to have received this award, but honestly, I have many, many colleagues at CLC who are equally deserving of recognition. I’ve taught at several community colleges and two four-year colleges, and CLC is by far the best. I’m proud to teach at an institution that values teaching so much.”
Students certainly believe Remedi values teaching. “He really cares about his students,” said Daria Constantinescu, a speech pathology major who started Remedi on the road to receiving the state award by nominating him for the CLC award. “He starts each of his courses with an exercise to help students identify what kind of learners they are. Then, he adapts his teaching style to the particular needs of the students. I learn by re-writing my notes, so he made a point of keeping his PowerPoint presentations up on the screen throughout the class so I could make sure I got the information in my notes.”
Beyond teaching style, Remedi is passionate about his discipline, Constantinescu said. “Professor Remedi pushes us to know the information because many of the students in his classes are preparing to become nurses and doctors. He knows that what he teaches may mean life or death later to a patient. In his classes, we’re learning for life, not just a grade.
