Summer camp set at Deere-Wiman

A summer camp at the Deere-Wiman House in Moline gives local children the chance to dive into the past. Set for the week of July 18-22, the camp's focus is on life in the 1800s. "Exciting, hands-on activities help children experience the trip west made by John Deere and thousands of pioneers," says Gretchen Frick Small, Deere-Wiman/Butterworth Center program director. "Children are thrilled by the adventures they have every day of the camp.

How To Make Crochet Rag Rugs | Floor Rugs Online

The idea of crochet rag rugs has been around since days prior to the invention of carpet. The cotton crocheted rag rug in general was constructed from worn clothes that were re-used for the making of the rug. New material could be difficult to obtain at that time and re-using the material was a way to renew value of worn out garments. Nowadays more than ever, new fabric is easy to purchase. Scraps of used material can still be utilized if that is the crafter’s choice. A crocheted rag rug may even be constructed from second hand clothing.

There are many sites online that show a person how to make these beautiful yet practical works of art. Many lovers of rag rugs have also posted youtube videos that show and give detailed instructions of how to make rag rugs. For other crafters who may prefer to read directions and look at illustrations, there are many written instructions on the craft of making rag rugs. Many books on rug making can be found in stores and libraries.

When it comes to crafting braided rugs , there is more than one way to construct them. The simplest way to start to crochet a cotton rag rug is to choose the scraps of fabric that will be used. Then start with 3 separate, and long strips. Often a pattern for braided rugs calls for the fabric to be ripped into strips a couple of inches wide. When the fabric is thinner, it should be cut wider, when cloth is quite thin, in order to let the braids be close to the same size, the strips may be cut narrower. Most of the time, the directions may instruct that the strips be sewn together, followed by rolling the strips into a ball before starting to braid. This method can however, be clumsy, and result in tangling. The easier way may be to start braiding and stitch the strips together along the way.

When using the fabric strips that are tied together with a knot at the end, make sure the 3 strips are of equal length, which can be determined by the size the rug is designed to be. More material can be added if it seems to be too short when the end is reached. On the other hand, fabric can be added as progress is made, providing that length is equal, in order to make the process easier. Once there are 3 pieces, begin to braid as you would hair. Make these braids in a circular manner. Upon completion, they can be tacked together using heavy thread, yarn or other fabric. Masking tape can be used for holding everything in place until it can be tied.

Creating a floor covering is a lot of fun. The ability to combine varied colors, textures, and recycled or new materials combines to create a unique form of art that is both beautiful and practical. Whether a person wants to beautify their own home or give as gifts, crochet rag rugs will be a wonderful compliment to any floor.
