Many still fail to comply with Tenafly's registration recount

TENAFLY — Superintendent Lynn Trager says many families still haven't re-registered their children, even as the district's program to determine if any students are being educated in Tenafly 's public schools without authorization neared the end of its second phase this week.

"We're still in the process of doing re-registration, and we still have quite a few families who have not re-registered," Trager said at the June 7 Board of Education meeting, though she did not quantify the number of students or families that had yet to participate in the recount.

The school board approved the re-registration in mid-January. At that time, the school board president Phyllis Perskie-Kesslen acknowledged that there had been reports that some students from outside the district might have been attending Tenafly schools without authorization. The first phase of the recount ended in late May, with all parents' having, in effect, to repeat the registration process at the district's central office at 500 Tenafly Road. A second phase got under way the first full week of this month and was to end on Wednesday, June 15.

"Still, many have not re-registered," the superintendent said in a telephone interview last Monday."I'm not sure they realize the consequences."

Those include disenrollment, Trager said in her remarks at the June 7 meeting.

"It's really important that you participate in the registration, or your child will not be able to attend the Tenafly public schools come September," she said. "Even if you think you are registered, if you don't re-register, your child is not registered."

The superintendent said the process was likely to be cut off in early August to give the district sufficient time to determine how many students will be enrolled in September. And she warned that July is traditionally a month when much of the central office is on vacation.

Trager said there might be a third phase in the process that could involve direct communication with families not yet in compliance, possibly by letter.

Earlier this year, the district said total enrollment was 3,689. Not all students who legally attend Tenafly schools are necessarily borough residents, however. Under certain circumstances, parents could chose to pay tuition to send their children to Tenafly schools, and students from Alpine , which has no high school, may attend Tenafly High under a so-called sending agreement that reimburses Tenafly. When the 2011-12 school budget was adopted, the cost per pupil was put at $14,392, though Trager said that figure has since been increased because Trenton has recalculated the formula to add items like special education.
