Libertarian Limitations on Full Display
Highlights the deficiencies of libertarian thought, while confirming the veracity of Emerson’s “foolish consistency” being “the hobgoblin of little minds”—and, on a personal note, reaffirming why I am not and never will be a libertarian.There are different brands of libertarians; if I read him right, Rockwell seems to be an exponent of the “anarcho-capitalist” branch—and if I understand them correctly, anarcho-capitalist libertarians see government of any sort as an unmitigated evil to be resisted at every turn. For anarcho-capitalists, the market is god and nothing should impede its operation. Quantity and not quality seems to be their guiding principle.
An intelligent person should favor the free market and work to curtail the unconstitutional encroachments of government (at all levels) upon his and his family’s life—God knows there have been enough of those in the past century or so—but that doesn’t mean government shouldn’t have a role in the life of the nation. The Founding Fathers established a rational form of limited government—so limited in its original form that its powers could be listed on the back of an envelope; the fact that several generations of short-sighted, greedy people have all but destroyed that system doesn’t give libertarians leave to advocate doing away with government altogether and depending on the dubious virtues idealistic libertarians seem to think reside in market capitalists’ bosoms.
Yet here comes Llewellyn Rockwell to do that very thing. The immediate issue is “immigration” so-called, and in true libertarian fashion Rockwell would rather see a continuation of the chaos wrought by the failure of government to do its duty, all in the name of some theoretical concept of how a free market should operate. Putting himself in the same camp with Communist anarchists, he would have America’s borders thrown open to anyone who can get across them. No restrictions, no qualifications, just show up and everything will work out all right.
The Constitution as originally devised gave the federal government the job of controlling the borders, and in recent years it has indeed made “a terrible mess,” but by failing to do its job.
