NHL draft: Recent history of 24th overall pick
What can the Red Wings expect to get with the 24th overall pick in the NHL draft June 24?
There's enough depth that the Wings should land a player who eventually will earn a regular shift on the team, although teams that have picked 24th recently have had varying degrees of success.
Arguably the best pick at No. 24 in the past 10 years has been Michael Richards by the Flyers in 2003. He scored 23 goals and had 66 points in 81 games this past season.
The worst pick probably was Calgary's Kris Chucko, who has played in two NHL games and spent this past season with two teams in the American Hockey League.
Swedes were taken at the No. 24 overall pick in four consecutive drafts -- Dennis Persson by the Sabres in 2006, Mikael Backlund by the Flames in 2007, Mattias Tedenby by the Devils in 2008 and Marcus Johansson by the Capitals in 2009 -- before the Blackhawks selected forward Kevin Hayes of Boston in June 2010.
Here are the past 10 No. 24 picks:
2010: F Kevin Hayes, Chicago. Played at Boston College this past season.
2009: F Marcus Johansson, Capitals. Made NHL debut this season and had 13 goals, 14 assists in 69 games.
2008: F Mattias Tedenby, Devils. Made NHL debut this season and had eight goals, 14 assists in 58 games.
2007: F Mikael Backlund, Flames. Has 11 goals, 24 assists in 97 games over three seasons.
2006: D Dennis Persson, Sabres. Played second full season with Portland (AHL) this past season.
2005: F T.J. Oshie, Blues. Has 44 goals, 77 assists in 182 career NHL games.
2004: F Kris Chucko, Calgary. Two career NHL games, with the Flames in 2008-09.
2003: F Michael Richards, Flyers. Has 133 goals, 216 assists in 453 career NHL games.
2002: F Alex Steen. Has 100 goals and 148 assists in 454 games with the Maple Leafs and the Blues.
2001: D Lukas Krajicek, Florida. Has 11 goals, 61 assists in 328 games with four NHL teams.

“If you go back to 2007 when we drafted Jonathon Blum in the first round, we didn't have a first-round pick until shortly before the draft when we traded (Kimmo) Timonen and (Scott) Hartnell,” Kealty said. “In situations like that, you don't know
With a lot of uncertainty among many of the players going into the 2011 NHL Draft, Jonathan Parker in my mind is well worth the risk. These are all certainly good traits, but one has to recall that Parker was also older than most of his condition.

2011 NHL Draft Prospect: Seth Ambroz - Western College Hockey Blog
Ambroz was one of the first players to be on people's radar for this years draft. An early growth spurt made Ambroz one of the most dominating players in his age group, and helped him make the roster of the Omaha Lancers of the USHL as a 15-year-old, where he had a very successful rookie season. After an increase in scoring in his second season, his offensive production plateaued this past season. Ambroz is a big, goal-scoring power forward, that plays with good meanness.

September 24, 2007 : "Seth Ambroz, Forward, Russell Stover U16-It seems like he’s grown quite a bit since last year. He looked pretty good for being a year younger than everyone else."
August 19, 2008 : 2. Seth Ambroz-Ambroz led the camp in scoring and physically dominated over everyone. He did an excellent job of finishing when he got scoring opportunities. He looked very good, and should be a solid college player regardless, but there have also been instances in the past where a player dominated at the Select 15s because he hit an early growth spurt and was bigger than everyone else, but faded back to the rest of the pack once everyone caught up in size.
Final Analysis:
Ambroz has seen his stock drop quite a bit from potential top ten pick on some people's lists to pretty much out of the first round on most people's lists. There's a couple reasons for this. First, he drew a lot of attention early on because he was one of the only underage players playing Tier I junior hockey in the world, and often times, the experts making top ten draft lists years in advance of a draft would be hard-pressed to name 20 players in that draft class. It's not the most scientific process.
The other reason is that Ambroz developed physically at such a age. He was so big and strong that he was able to play like a very good 18-year-old in the USHL at age 15. Playing like a very good 18-year-old is impressive as at that age. Not as much when he's actually 18.
