Andretti team seems ready to contend at Milwaukee
WEST ALLIS, Wis. -- Michael Andretti doesn't need to see all the GoDaddy.com signage around the Milwaukee Mile to know that it's time for his team to go forward in Izod IndyCar Series races.
Andretti Autosport, which is sponsored by Bob Parsons' company, doesn't have a driver in the top 10 of the season standings after seven races.
The Indianapolis-based team sees a future that might not include Danica Patrick. It didn't get Mike Conway or Ryan Hunter-Reay to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. It has just one win -- Conway at Long Beach, Calif., in April -- in the past 16 races.
And yet, things could be turning around at the right time.
Marco Andretti, Patrick and Hunter-Reay finished in the top nine of last weekend's second race at Texas Motor Speedway, and the team boss saw progress Friday in a two-hour practice at Wisconsin State Fair Park.
All four drivers feel they're stronger than simply being in the top 13.
"I think we're a top six (car)," said Hunter-Reay, who won Champ Car's 2004 race here from the pole. "I had it all put together (for a hot lap) and, of all people, Conway got in the way. The car's good."
Michael Andretti heard that from all of his drivers.
"I think all our guys are really happy," he said. "They didn't get clean laps with their new-tire runs, but we should be a contender."
They'll again be chasing the championship contenders. Will Power of Team Penske led Friday's practice with a lap of 167.648 mph with Dario Franchitti of Ganassi Racing second at 167.462.
The change for Andretti's team is the color schemes. Helping to promote GoDaddy.com, Hunter-Reay is driving a car painted like Patrick's. Conway's car now is yellow and white as Hunter-Reay's has been.
Hunter-Reay said it looks odd to him. He hopes his spotter and crew don't lose track during the race.
"We've got two Go.Daddy cars out there and a DHL/Sun Drop car that's not (mine)," he said. "It's confusing."
Power's car won't be hard to find if he keeps running as well as he has been: third and first in the two Texas races. This is his third trip to Milwaukee, and he feels strong.
"The car feels really good and solid," he said. "I'd be very disappointed if we're not at the front."
Qualifying for the Milwaukee 225 is at 5:45 p.m. today. The race is at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Alex Tagliani, who has won the series' past two oval-track poles at Texas and Indianapolis, spun into the wall at the exit of turn four during practice.
