Ramesses The Great

Readers tell 'Hot Button': A new home for Ramesses the Great?

This old guy is one of our connections between our hometown Memphis and Memphis, Egypt -- just like The Pyramid, and the big river, even while it's not the Nile.

So, since he can't stay where he is, I would like to see him in Tom Lee Park, facing the river and greeting visitors.

I guess the three main options that have been tossed around are the University of Memphis, the Memphis Zoo or Downtown (riverside).

While the U of M has a fine Egyptian artifacts collection, the statue would be rarely seen by most people, local or tourist.

If Ramesses is going to remain Downtown, keeping him by The Pyramid makes the most sense. But if Bass Pro Shops doesn't want him, then no other location would make him anything other than an oddity.

So, the zoo has my vote. There's already an Egyptian theme to the main entry area, and a statue of Sekhmet by the lion pen. And a lot more tourists and locals would see it at the zoo than The Pyramid or riverside or at the U of M. The zoo increases his accessibility.

Move Ramesses? Move the Egyptian studies museum to The Pyramid -- everybody wins.

Construct a tunnel into a section of basement for the tomb (museum), which would eventually enter into the Bass Pro Shops sales area. Travelers would make this a destination.

The U of M wins -- more publicity and more interest for the Egyptian studies program. Bass Pro wins -- more traffic and goodwill. Students win with employment as Egyptian studies guides or in sales for Bass Pro. The city wins with more visitors, and travelers and their children (future students) win.

Use the $50,000 wisely. The law school is downtown; why not the school of Egyptian studies?

I think if the University of Memphis wants the statue, that's fine, or it could stay where it is, too. One thing does need to be addressed, however. A great number of people paid to buy bricks to honor or memorialize loved ones. What happens to all of those? The people who bought them expected them to be there for a much longer time than this. Will they be moved, too? They should be.

Anthony Spalinger, "The Great Dedicatory Inscription of Ramesses II: A Solar-Osirian Tractate at Abydos (Culture and History of the Ancient Near East)" Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN 10: 9004170308 | 2008 | PDF | 139 pages | 1.6 MBThis volume covers, for the first time, the interaction of a major historical event with the development of the Egyptian Solar-Osirian theology. Pharaoh Ramesses II visited the sacred area of Abydos soon after his recognition of power at Luxor in Thebes. With him were many high officials, one of whom would be soon appointed to be the high Priest of Amun at Thebes, Nebwenenef. During his visit, the king stressed his personal relationship with his father, Seti I as well as ordering the completion of his temple. By analyzing certain passages within Ramesses' official account, the "Dedicatory Inscription", with others of Seti, a more nuanced appreciation of the growing theological system of Osirus plus Re, the sun god, comes to the fore. This significance of this is heightened when we remember that the king's account was exhibited in the portico of Seti I's temple.
