Gin Card Game

'Gin Game' volatile at Four Flags

Act I had a slow start as the characters were introduced to each other and bonded over their dislike of the home. Drew and Oesch establish relatable characters and joke easily with each other. Both are guarded, but they weave through card games and conversation, interlocking light-hearted conversation about gin rummy with deeper questions about their lives in the nursing home. The conservative Fonsia Dorsey and the volatile Weller Martin mock the other residents of the home and bond over their common lucidity. Yet the tension builds as Martin teaches his new acquaintance the rules of gin rummy. He cannot win a single game, and Dorsey becomes more assertive as the play progresses. As the pair learns more about each other, a card game becomes the means for each friend to undermine the other. Oesch sparks the play’s tension as he introduces the game of gin rummy and progressively unwinds mentally after his string of losses. He catches the audience in his engaging delivery of Martin’s cynical sense of humor, but he also simmers with the character’s barely-suppressed rage throughout the show. When consecutive losses — too close to the reality of his own life — send Martin over the edge, Oesch perfectly conveys the character’s instability. When he throws the card table and swears incessantly at Dorsey, his face glows with red anger. With his delivery, Oesch connects the simple loss — a game of gin rummy — to the great failings in his character’s past. Martin’s scars are visible in Oesch. Although Martin initiates the play’s conflict with his unstable temper, Dorsey rises to his attacks with vengeful anger. Drew builds a character lost in her own lies and paralyzed by the fear of discovery. She enters Act I with a sense of insecurity and a feigned naïveté, but as her gin rummy wins accumulate, her confidence grows. Drew, a veteran Four Flags Player, successfully establishes Dorsey as a character with multiple layers that become apparent as Martin breaks through her defenses. Throughout the play, Drew holds her body with a physical tension that matches the mental dam her character builds to protect her secrets, but she collapses with fear and grief in the final moments of the play when the last bits of the dam are broken down as well.

Imagine a gin rummy hand right after the deal. Until you build a winning hand, you're trying to assemble sets and runs by drawing cards and discarding others, before you even know what you really need. You either pull it off and every card is a keeper
