Wildlife commission working on busy month
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission met in St. Augustine last week to review protective designation recommendations for 61 animal species. It was determined that 40 should be listed as "threatened," and five as "species of special concern." An additional 16 species will be removed from the state's list of threatened species. Lists of protective designations are available at myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/imperiled/biological-status/listing-recommendations/.FWC will reopen the recreational snook fishery on the Atlantic coast on Sept. 1.
The FWC is putting on a license-free saltwater fishing weekend today and Sunday to encourage people to get outside and fish.Fishing regulations (e.g. size and bag limits) must still be followed -- rules are online at www.myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/regulations/.
The FWC will be reviewing regulations pertaining to spotted sea trout and sharks, and is seeking public input. Public meetings to discuss possible changes in recreational spotted sea trout rules will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jacksonville Public Library Southeast Branch, 10599 Deerwood Park Blvd., Jacksonville, and July 6 at the Brevard Agricultural Center, 3695 Lake Drive, Cocoa. Public meetings to discuss possible changes to shark fishing rules will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Brevard Agricultural Center and June 30 at the St. Johns County Auditorium, 4020 Lewis Speedway, St. Augustine.
The FWC will have call-in phone workshops for those unable to attend the public meetings. The workshop for sharks will be from 6 to 8 p.m. July 7. The workshop on spotted sea trout will be from 6 to 8 p.m. July 12. Contact the FWC at 850-487-0554 to register for either one of the call-in workshops.
We are now almost three weeks into the hurricane season. Most of us are familiar with the checklist of items that should be in a disaster supply kit (if not, see www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/prepare/supply_kit.shtml). Many people are not aware of special steps they should take to secure their boat.
The University of Florida's IFAS Extension program has developed a document called "The Disaster Handbook'' that is available online at disaster.ifas.ufl.edu/chap7fr.htm. Steps vessel owners should take include:
Is your boat in a marina, at a mooring, in dry storage or on a trailer? Do you know how it should be tied down? Do you know if the marina staff will do this or is it your responsibility? Even boats on trailers should be tied down.
