Cinder(ella) - Dreams Can Come True

SEATTLE - Everyone loves the story of Cinderella. From the time we're young and we first hear the rags to riches fairytale about the unfortunate beauty that had to endure the abuse of her evil step mother and wicked step sisters, we were hooked. But who wouldn't be? Everyone loves seeing the magic of turning a pumpkin into a carriage; seeing Cinderella's golden locks swept up into an elegant French twist; and watching her shimmery gown, that fits her perfect figure, sparkle as the handsome prince twirls her around the dance floor.

This isn't that type of fairytale.

The only thing that Veronica Perez-Murillo has in common to our childhood princess is perhaps her petite, 6 1/2 inch, feet. But while Perez is notorious for misplacing things, she has yet to forget her glass slippers anywhere- which in her case is a pair of baby purple Adidas F50 cleats. So what does a girl who grew up in San Mateo, Calif., eldest of three sisters and raised primarily by her mother and extended family of aunts and cousins have in common with Cinderella? Well nothing really. Veronica, affectionately known as Vero to her family and close friends, doesn't have shiny blonde hair, isn't tall and lanky, prefers soccer shorts to ball gowns and oh ya- did I mention she's Mexican?

Despite the differences in these two characters, Veronica is living out her own fairytale story. There aren't any magical pumpkins or a prince charming in her tale (yet), but the underlying plot is similar: she was girl who never had it easy and dreamed of a different life. However, instead of castles faraway she dreamed of stadiums filled with fans, instead of shimmery gowns she fantasized about the latest designs of Nike and Adidas uniforms, and instead of spinning around ballroom floors she yearned to twirl around opponents on a bed of freshly cut grass. Perhaps the biggest difference is that Veronica didn't wait around for a fairy godmother to come and help her. She prayed, wished and dreamed, but most importantly- she took action.
