Fire victim was lawyer remembered as hardworking | Philadelphia Inquirer ...

A jury had been selected, and one of Burlington County's most anticipated criminal trials of the year was set to begin Tuesday morning.

But the judge rescheduled the case, after participants learned that one of the defense lawyers had died Monday morning in a house fire across the Delaware River in Bucks County.

Holly C. Fusco, 49, a veteran criminal and civil attorney, died alone in the bedroom of her home on an isolated, wooded lot in Lower Makefield. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

Officials had not yet determined the cause of the fire. Police have said it appeared to be accidental, possibly caused by careless smoking.

Fusco had been preparing to defend Heather Lewis, a Pemberton woman, on sexual-assault charges. Lewis and her former boyfriend, suspended Moorestown Township Police Officer Robert Melia Jr., are accused of molesting three girls on various dates between 2000 and 2008.

Lewis faces an additional charge of molesting a boy in 2007 at her home.

Opening statements were scheduled for Tuesday. Fusco's death forced a judge to postpone the case to July 26.

It would surprise no one if Fusco had fallen asleep with a cigarette while working late to prepare, said Kevin Walker, a deputy public defender who worked with her in Burlington County. She was both a smoker and a workhorse.

"When she took a case, she would work night and day on it," Walker said. Her clients "just adored her."

That was no small accomplishment for a public defender, whose clients are typically the downtrodden who have no choice of lawyers.

Fusco was a public defender from 2006 to 2009 before going into private practice.

When Walker went on a one-year sabbatical, Fusco took over his cases. His old clients raved about her, he said.

"She kind of had her emotions on her shirtsleeve, and she gravitated toward the underdogs," Walker said. "She liked the good fight, she didn't mind tilting at windmills, and, at the same time, she got some good results."

Burlington County Superior Court Judge M. Patricia Richmond said Fusco "had two speeds: full ahead and stop. She always made sure that her clients' interests were protected and made the prosecutors prove their case."

Fusco earned a bachelor's degree from Temple University in 1988 and a law degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco in 1991.
