AC Pup: Dog comes to loving home from overseas after being shot

Miss Donna donates her time every week, coming from out of town to Macon Animal Control to photograph my Pound Pals. Her amazing pictures are responsible for many Pound Pals finding perfect families. And she does all of this out of the goodness of her heart.

As if that’s not enough generosity, Miss Donna is also involved in doing something else remarkable. She and Miss Bonnie Murphey have decided to do something to make a huge difference for the animals in our area, all because of a dog, a chicken and a gun.

Kratos is a dog who lived overseas with his family. As the story goes, his neighbor had a chicken that Kratos just had to have. So Kratos escaped from his yard and stole the chicken, but never dreamed what would happen next.

The upset neighbor who owned the chicken shot Kratos in the face at point-blank range. Kratos’ owner confronted the neighbor, but when the neighbor offered him $300, the owner took the money and left the blind and bleeding Kratos to die.

Thank goodness another neighbor saw what happened and intervened. This kind neighbor contacted an animal rescue group who connected Kratos with a large animal welfare organization in Beirut, Lebanon. A Facebook page was created for him, where Miss Bonnie took notice.

His story touched Miss Bonnie’s tender heart, and she began communicating with his foster mom to follow his recovery. When Kratos recuperated and was available for adoption, Miss Bonnie jumped at the chance to become Kratos’ new mom. But she had to get him to America.

Finally, on May 2, Kratos arrived in Atlanta after traveling from Beirut to Germany and then to America. Miss Donna and Miss Bonnie were waiting at the airport to welcome him to his new home where he will be cherished for the rest of his life.

And now for the remarkable part: Miss Bonnie and Miss Donna decided to organize a 5K race called For the Love of Kratos to benefit local animal rescue groups. The race will be held June 11 at 8 a.m. beginning at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Rivoli Drive in Macon.

Walkers, runners and leashed dogs are all welcome to participate. And supplies that can be used at the shelter, such as dog or cat food, puppy pads, leashes, collars and bleach, just to name a few, will be collected.

While Kratos symbolizes power and strength in Greek mythology, we’re hoping his story will symbolize the power of love for animals in our area. Won’t you come to the race next Saturday? Kratos and I will be there!
